Examinations
After satisfactorily completing graduate education and post-graduate training, the candidate is eligible for the certifying examination administered by the American Board of Dermatology (ABD), which covers clinical and laboratory dermatology as well as dermatopathology (pathology evaluation of the skin).

To maintain certified status, dermatologists must take a recertification examination every 10 years.

Board Certification
Once the physician has successfully completed the required course of graduate study and clinical training and has passed the examination, he or she is awarded a certificate by the American Board of Dermatology.
