Scared to death

Post a new topicby livingwith on Sat Oct 06, 2007 12:19 am

I am 22 years old and i have lost 60% of my hair and both my eyebrows.
I first noticed something was wrong on my wedding day, just over two years ago. My hairdresser noticed a small patch at the back of my head and I just laughed it off and forgot all about it. About 3months later my hair started falling out in clumps. I put it all down to stress. It continued for a couple of months then eased off.
A few months later it all started again so I went and saw a dermatologist They did a biopsy and I...Read the full article

just so you know i understand how you feel totally. i have had alopecia for a year this past august and at first i was scared and panic stricken just like you and though they say not i am convinced mine was
due to two things recently highlighted hair and tremendous stress at work. it all fell out in less than
45 days! i went immediately to a doctor followed by two dermatologists. i went on a cruise to releive
some of the stress and came back and took scalp injections. i have done alot of research on the web
and it is discouraging. they say we have a 50/50 chance of the hair growing back but from what i have
seen and read i am not counting on it. now as for wearing a wig i ordered lots of wigs and i work at
a car dealership with nothing but men so the first day i wore my wig to work i cried all the way knowing they would know i had on a wig even though it was my first day back from the cruise. know
what they did not even notice and i got lots of complements on my hair!! still i was like you having a hard time coping with it. i went to a wig shop in a larger town to get some wigs and i met two ladies
who came in to look and i could not tell they had on wigs. now this was the turning point for me to see and understand that people are not as caught up in how we look as we think. they don't even notice for the most part because they have their own lives and problems. now i am a little luckier
than you in the fact that i am 61 so no one expects me to be miss america like they would you at your age. but i am also married to a man 10 years younger and we have only been married for 7 years.
so this has been tough for me too i have had to work at my self confidence alot. i take the attitude
that its not that i care people know i wear a wig but its a bigger deal to them than me because i do not want them to feel sorry for me or for them to not understand this few people understand alopecia
where with cancer they do. so i choose to live like i am normal just for other people sakes. i wear the same style wig i do not switch except at home. i try to give the appearance that anyone would who is normal so to speak. it took alot of time and i think the fact that i am older too but i have come to accept things not give up but accept it. i still do research and i am having some slight hair
growth but nothing major i am going back to the doctor because i have not been in six months i will not however let this keep me in a doctors office or subject myself to discomfort just for hair i will pursue what is comfortable for me and my life and that is what i suggest for you. you have to be happy with yourself too not just what other people think. good luck and you can be happy without hair!
