Age 33, Basal Cell

Post a new topicby livingwith on Sun Sep 23, 2007 12:11 pm

Diagnosed with basal cell carcinoma at age 33, took me completely by surprise. Be knowledgable. If you have any family history of skin cancer start seeing a dermatoligist EARLY for prevention. Family history combined with “special occasion” tanning visits can be thanked. I had my first Mohs Surgery on my face between the bridge of my nose/under eye area, and a skin graft taken from behind my ear.

Re: Age 33, Basal Cell - mine is squamous in same spot

I'm age 44 - I had a squamous cell in the exact same spot and had Mohs surgery to correct it. It took two tries to get rid of all the cancer cells. The first try was not a big deal at all, the second one was a bit more dicey. All in all, only about five minutes of unhappiness. Although I was surprised about what a black eye really looks like. If anyone is going to get this done in the same spot, just know that you'll have a swollen black eye for a few days. I had never had one before in my life. I looked like a pretty tough gal for about a week. It's been two months and my scar is healing great - seven stitches total and you really would not guess that was the case.
If you are getting this surgery, know that it is about 5 minutes for each try, and often they get it on the first try(40% of the time). And it really is not that painful. I freaked out for three days before and was very relieved when I realized it was not as awful as I had assumed it would be.
